Juicy words (1st part)

Slovenian is a weird language, hard to learn for strangers and somehow old for us native speakers. At least, I think it is. We don't have proper translations when it comes to edging, facial, and other juicy words.

Sex is being discussed more and more, but Slovenians quickly run out of words when we want to say something about it. We prefer to use established terms in English. We seem safe in foreign language; maybe we feel more disconnected from the topic when we use it. Unfortunately, Slovenian does not follow the flow of the current juicy conversations; we are left somewhere far behind. We may be more advanced in thinking and bed, but words do not want to come out of our mouths.

I have been working on this matter for a long time. It started innocently, with a simple glossary of sex-related terms, but I quickly realized that it would not get me very far. So I put the dictionary in a corner for a while and looked at synonyms. I started with the two organs closely linked to sex, the penis and the vagina. 

For stalactite in the relaxed state and stalagmite, while titillated, Slovenian has the following synonyms: bingelj (something that is dangling), falus (phallos), kurac (cock; we also use it to swear, and we use it a lot), lulček (willie), spolni ud (male organ), pimpek (it sounds like pimples and regarding size, they are very similar pimple and willie), scalo (willie, but not in a cute way though), tič (dick; English speakers use it to swear). The most common term cock, a Proto-Slavic vowel, originally meant "cockerel". 'Kur' means cock. The word 'kurba' (whore) is said to have originated from the same word. Here are more creative synonyms for penis in Slovenian: austric (Austrian; probably because of Austria's former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz), banana, batina (boner), basa (big sausage), curakar. The latter term originates in its function - fluids are dripping from it at any time, day or night. Somewhat less well-known and used terms are: feder (spring; we are using it in a sentence that can be said for overly active kids, or for men and women looking for sex - "feder ga goni"), fukfedra (this term is said to be used mainly by Styrians and I don't even know where this word originates), taspodn (the thing below; this word also has connotative meaning in Slovenia since we also use it as an insult for the people living in the Balkans) and, in the light of current events, Putin (Put in, put out).

Well, a vagina is just a vagina. Unfortunately, no synonym can be found in official Slovenian dictionaries, and not many of them can be found on the webpage Razvezani jezik (a modern Slovenian dictionary). The ones that stand out are mona (a very rude or boring person), muca (pussy), and the most commonly used pička (cunt; also a swear word), which has several other meanings but originally meant buttocks or ass:

• “pripadnica ženskega spola, ne glede na starost […]”
• “dekle v razmerju do fanta, punca, dekle; […]”
• “bojazljivec, strahopetec, […]”
• “pokvarjen, malovreden; tudi zahrbten, hinavski človek; […]”
• “lepotica, krasno dekle. […]”

If you type 'female genitalia' into a search engine, Fran (one of the Slovenian online dictionaries) comes up with nothing, and the dictionary of synonyms offers only one word - veselička (small garden party). This word can also be found in Razvezani jezik. Like many other words, this one was coined by Toporišič, our grammarian. In addition, I also found a few more synonyms: frgazar, a colloquial term for a carburetor and apparently also for a woman's genitalia. Well, I suppose you could also call it a "dead rabbit, three times run over, lying on the road". Or češplja (plum) and frača’(slingshot).

You will recognize more words meaning the union of the above two organs: seks (sex), fuk (fuck), spolni odnos (sexual intercourse), kavs (shag), koitus (coitus), and some women's favorite word, ljubljenje (lovemaking). Food-related euphemisms for sex are the headmaster's brunch (sex at work), the rooster's breakfast (sex in the morning), the bear's lunch (the lesser-known after-lunch sex; the female catches the food for male, who after having a gorgeous meal, takes five for having sex), and the mine worker's supper ("black barley coffee and sex"). Finally, we borrowed a word from computer science, apdejtat (to update), which refers to a man having to get a woman into bed so that she is a little less grumpy than usual. Other verb forms indicating sexual activity are položiti (to get on), nategniti (to shag), našopati (to fill someone up), and poservisirati (to make someone feel better; to repair a car). A nastier metaphor for sex is "lulo boxat" (to box a pussy - don't ask, I don't understand it either).

A few hours of browsing the website of the modern dictionary Razvezani jezik brought another word up - narokoko, a synonym for jerking off, daviti purana (to strangle a turkey), schnicltoučt (beat the meat), or, in proper Slovene, masturbation. Looking at the above words, they all refer to male masturbation, and for the female, we know only the grossest word, which comes from the German word Reizen - rajcati (it also means to turn someone on, but in this case, it means to jerk off).

Next time, on to a more serious subject. Although I could write and write about synonyms, I am much more interested in how the Slovenian language keeps up with the fast pace of the English language, which is forging new sex-related words every day.
