#feminism
What do you think of when you read the word 'feminism'? On furry women, full of anger, who want revenge on the whole male population? Or maybe on pop stars who are proudly shouting at a concert that they are feminists, but at the same time, they are most interested in how much money they will earn and how many women will applaud them?
Honestly, I got lost. After all, I've read about feminism over the years, I'm just even more baffled. There are as many feminist courses today as there are political parties. Feminists stand on opposite banks, waiting to devour each other. They argue about attitudes toward sex, the use of erotic toys, and other nonsense that is no longer relevant to feminism, not really.
I would say that modern feminism stands on shaky ground. With excessive effort to approach the younger generations, it seems empty. It has become just one of the labels, a 'hashtag' for lifestyle. Today, it is fashionable to be a feminist; feminism has become commercially attractive with the sale of 'Death to Patriarchy' or 'Long Live Feminism' T-shirts. They are fighting against everything, from genital mutilation, rape, sexual abuse to eliminating pay gap differences, tirelessly searching for women in leadership positions and politics. Today, a woman is considered a true feminist when she preaches to a fucking student behind the counter when he offers her a toy for girls that gender does not determine her. We are also feminists if we buy a 'Death to Patriarchy' T-shirt as we show our disagreement with the system that put women in a permanent relationship with the stove.
On the other hand, we have radicals who would like to take revenge on men and those 'quasi' feminists mentioned earlier. They are working only on gaining popularity and getting as many followers as possible. On the other hand, radical feminism is too focused on the fight against men, even though we in the western world have already earned equal status in society, and there is no need to exterminate them. Accordingly, they also oppose the pornography and sex industries. They are especially bothered by prostitutes, but they also quickly find an excuse for them. Behind them stands a pimp, a man who forces them into prostitution. Just what would self-employed women who stand under a red light every night say to that?
In the past, feminism advocated for a change, for a society in which women would be equal to men. But when we gained equality in Western culture, feminism focused on details that don't bring any change in the long run.
Feminism has become fashionable on the one hand, and on the other, it still focuses too much on the man's role. In modern feminism, men have become an endangered species - dragons. No, I don't defend them, but I can't avoid the feeling that feminism wants to subdue them, that wants to take revenge on them, to hang them for every mistake they make. Feminist reckoning lay a guilt trip on men. What is the purpose of this hatred? Where is it supposed to take us? To the Amazon?
Feminism was good. What's more, it was worthwhile. It showed us the possibility of choice; it contributed to our independence. It made this possible for us, along with a change in the system that offered us power. As we always wanted to, we hid in the Trojan horse and got behind the system's walls. We had one purpose - to destroy it from within and then invite those waiting for us on the other side to come in. However, we became comfortable inside the walls. We have become equal to men - what we have always wanted. We realized that the system allows us to climb the social ladder; it offers us money and freedom. And there's nothing more comfortable than being a feminist from an armchair and loudly complain every time a man comes up on television or nod happily when the system we live in is being criticized.
Don't sharpen your knives if I think today is the best time for women. We found and run our companies, achieve high flying goals everywhere, hell, we are high in politics, surpass our male colleagues in education, are autonomous in sexuality, take care of the home, skillfully coordinate our obligations, and much more. In the west, we got what we fought for - a place under the sun. We should be filled with optimism, but we are not.
The feminism of the past century is obsolete and urgently needs new ideas, new goals. If it cannot do this, we do not have to keep it alive, even though it has been helpful in the past. Perhaps we should find a way to take care of women in countries where they are still oppressed. Look past the tip of your nose and give other women a choice that we are enjoying. To fight as a society against sexual abuse and, ultimately, against the misuse of sexual abuse, to fight for reproductive rights. Feminism should not become another hashtag.
