Red ribbon
Every year, on the first of December, we wear the red ribbon. But do we even know why? We wear it to raise awareness and show support for people living with AIDS.
This acronym stands for:
"acquired immunodeficiency syndrome - the final stage of HIV infection"
For some people, December first is when they can grab as many free condoms as they like from medical students' arms, while others show support to all survivors and all those who have lost the fight with the disease.
World AIDS Day was first celebrated in 1988, and the red ribbon became its symbol in 1991. The author was impressed by the yellow ribbon, which was made to thank the American soldiers for everything they did in the Gulf War. Jeremy Irons was the first to wear a red ribbon - a symbol of love, passion, and blood - in public at the Tony Awards.
